Research

Medicine and surgery specifically aimed to treat diseases and disorders with ultimate goal to improve a quality of life of the patient. Objective measurements of the improvement a quality of life or lack of thereof allows physicians and scientists to evaluate treatment modalities widely accepted in medical community as well as newly developed techniques to achieve that ultimate goal.

In face-to-face, open-ended interviews with women who are considering pelvic floor reconstructive surgery, they demonstrate questions about the improvement of the quality of life in women who have already undergone surgery. Responses in the literature lack specific description of improvement, the outcomes may vary according to the treatment procedure, and responses are difficult to generalize with different surgical approaches, different surgeons and their individual technique.

Our own experience has shown that pelvis relaxations and its associated symptoms adversely affect three basic pelvic functions in women. They are urine and/or fecal continence and normal bladder and bowel evacuation as well as sexual function. It is well known fact that the symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction interfere with normal daily activity, social, sexual, psychological, and emotional well-being, which reflects in a decrease of quality of life.

This study would evaluate the hypothesis that women who have undergone pelvic reconstructive surgery for the treatment of pelvic floor dysfunction would report less bother from dysfunctional symptoms, and hence a better quality of life, related to urinary function, bowel function, pelvic organ prolapse, activity, and sexual function (if sexually active) six months, twelve months, two and five years after operation compared to that before surgery. It is extremely important to evaluate the longevity of results of operations since many of them have high failure rates what may lead to deterioration of quality of life.

We would like to ask for your voluntary participation in our clinical research project The nature of you participation is limited to answering questions related to the impact of your symptoms on your quality of life and will take only a few minutes. Questionnaires are provided as a part of a "Welcome Package". Once again you participation is voluntary and regardless of your decision you care will not compromised. If you would decide not to participate in the study, please, bring blank forms to our office at the time of your visit.
